PM Reviews Security Arrangements for Gilgit-Baltistan Elections

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reviewed security arrangements for the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan elections during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, as authorities move to ensure a peaceful and secure voting process.

Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan’s mountainous northern region, will hold elections for its legislative assembly on June 7. More than 5,000 police personnel have been deployed to provide security during the polls.

Naqvi met Sharif in Lahore and briefed him on the country’s overall law and order situation, with a particular focus on preparations for the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The interior minister informed the premier that law enforcement agencies had finalized comprehensive arrangements to ensure the elections are conducted in a peaceful, transparent and orderly manner.

“A comprehensive security plan has been formulated to maintain law and order during the electoral process and provide a safe environment for voters,” the statement quoted Naqvi as saying.

Sharif expressed satisfaction with the security preparations and commended the interior minister and law enforcement agencies for their efforts. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the democratic process and ensuring free and peaceful elections.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly was established under the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order of 2009. The 33-member house comprises 24 general seats, six seats reserved for women and three seats reserved for technocrats and professionals.
