PESHAWAR: A dispute over the security detail of Awami National Party (ANP) Central President and Senator Aimal Wali Khan has escalated, revealing tensions between provincial and federal authorities and raising constitutional questions about security responsibility for a senator elected from Balochistan .
Conflicting Claims on Security Withdrawal
The controversy began when Aimal Wali Khan announced on social media that his security had been withdrawn .
This action was taken by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Inspector General (IG) Zulfiqar Hameed, who defied explicit instructions from KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur that the security “under no circumstances should be withdrawn” .
The ANP accused the KP police chief of acting on the orders of the federal Interior Ministry, calling the move a “serious violation of provincial authority” that effectively suspends the constitution .
In response, Chief Minister Gandapur strongly rejected the ANP’s objections, characterizing them as a “complete abuse and malicious act” aimed at political point-scoring .
Balochistan’s Constitutional Responsibility Highlighted
Amid the accusations, Chief Minister Gandapur introduced a significant constitutional point to the debate. He stated that since Aimal Wali Khan has been elected as a senator from Balochistan, the primary responsibility for his security lies with the Balochistan government and federal institutions . Despite this constitutional arrangement, Gandapur emphasized that his government provided security to the ANP leader by putting aside political differences .
Assurances Amid Ongoing Tension
Following the withdrawal, Chief Minister Gandapur personally contacted Aimal Wali Khan and assured him that his security would remain intact . The KP government also directed police to ensure the security of Khan and his family .
On the other hand, the CM’s spokesperson clarified that the decision to withdraw security was made by the federal government, but the provincial chief minister would ensure security is provided.
KP Adviser on Information, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, also assured full security for the ANP leader, stating, “Despite political differences, we will not compromise on his security” .
