Security Concerns Force Venue Shift for Historic US-Iran Ceremony

SWITZERLAND : In a significant diplomatic development, the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States has been rescheduled and relocated. Originally planned for Geneva, the ceremony will now take place on June 19 at the Bürgenstock resort, near Lucerne in central Switzerland, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the Swiss Foreign Ministry, the venue was selected primarily for security reasons, citing the area’s difficult terrain and isolated positioning as ideal for hosting high-stakes negotiations. The location was proposed by Pakistani and Qatari mediators, in coordination with both Washington and Tehran.

The historic peace agreement ceremony will be hosted by Pakistan, with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif departing for the event on Thursday. He will be accompanied by the Deputy Prime Minister and several federal ministers, underscoring Islamabad’s central role in brokering the accord.

Iran’s delegation will be led by Parliamentary Speaker and negotiator Baqir Qalibaf, sources close to the Iranian government confirmed.

From the U.S. side, President Donald Trump has indicated he may personally attend, though Vice President JD Vance has been confirmed to represent the administration at the signing. Trump earlier told reporters, “I might also be there,” leaving the door open for a potential presidential appearance.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the process, stating that Doha will remain actively involved in the ongoing negotiation framework as part of the Pakistan-led mediation effort. Qatar will be represented at the ceremony, alongside Pakistani mediators, representatives from regional nations, and other parties to the deal.

The June 19 signing marks a potential turning point in decades of strained relations between Iran and the United States, with Swiss neutrality providing the diplomatic backdrop for what many are calling a breakthrough in Middle Eastern stability. Further logistical and security details are expected to be released in the coming days.
