MOSCOW: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation to discuss the ongoing war involving Iran and the conflict in Ukraine.
The call, described by Russian officials as “frank and constructive,” lasted about one hour and marked the first direct communication between the two leaders since December.
“The accent was placed on the situation surrounding the conflict with Iran and the bilateral negotiations underway with the representatives of the United States on settling the Ukrainian question,” Ushakov said while briefing the media.
In this regard, President Putin reportedly focused on the importance of resolving the situation through diplomatic means.
He called for a swift political and diplomatic settlement to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.
In this sense, Russia has maintained close political and strategic ties with Iran, which has long been considered a key regional partner of Moscow. Russian officials have repeatedly expressed concern over the potential escalation of the conflict and its broader implications for regional and global stability.
President Putin mentioned the need to reduce tensions and encouraged dialogue aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the crisis. He stressed that diplomacy should remain the primary path to addressing the dispute.
The conversation also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, where Russia and Western countries remain deeply divided over the conflict.
Ushakov noted that the leaders discussed bilateral negotiations that have been taking place between Russian and American representatives regarding possible approaches to resolving the Ukrainian issue.
The telephone conversation comes at a time of increased geopolitical tensions, with conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East continuing to shape global security dynamics.
