Pakistan Calls for Tackling Root Causes of Human Trafficking

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged the global community to address the root causes of human trafficking, warning that restrictive visa policies and tight border regimes only push vulnerable people toward smugglers.

Speaking at a high-level UN meeting on the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said economic disparities, limited legal migration pathways, and unresolved conflicts continue to drive the problem.

He said armed conflicts, climate-related disasters, and widening economic gaps have intensified trafficking trends. He added that the rising number of children falling victim to traffickers underscores the scale of the challenge.

Jadoon described Pakistan as a country of origin, transit, and destination for the movement of people.

He said Pakistan is adopting a two-pronged approach by boosting domestic measures and expanding international cooperation to ensure a coordinated global response.

He said Pakistan has strengthened its actions by launching a National Action Plan on Countering the Smuggling of Migrants (2026–2031), with a separate plan on Trafficking in Persons under preparation. He said the Integrated Border Management System now operates at all immigration checkpoints to reinforce enforcement against traffickers.

He said more than 36,000 officials have received training in anti-trafficking laws and enforcement with support from international partners. He added that over 100 shelter homes have been set up across the country to provide psychological support, legal aid, and vocational training to victims.
