KARACHI: In a brazen daylight heist, two armed motorcycle-borne robbers stole a staggering Rs 8 million from an electronics merchant on the busy Saddar Zainab-ul-Nisa Street on Friday, sending shockwaves through the commercial district.
The victim, the proprietor of AT Electronics located in the Kemari area, had embarked on a multi-branch banking ordeal to withdraw the substantial cash amount. According to SSP South, the merchant first visited a bank branch in the Mari area, only to be redirected by the bank administration to its Mall Road branch.
Ultimately successful in withdrawing the funds from a Saddar bank branch, the merchant was transporting the cash on his motorcycle when the robbery occurred. “Two robbers came in pursuit,” stated SSP South, detailing the sequence of events. They intercepted the merchant, brandished firearms, and seized the bag containing Rs 8 million before speeding away from the scene on their motorcycle.
The incident, occurring in a densely populated and commercial hub in the heart of the city, has raised serious concerns about street crime and public security. SSP South confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) of the robbery has been promptly registered at the local police station.
“A search for the accused is underway,” the senior police official added, indicating that investigations have been launched. Police are likely reviewing CCTV footage from the bank’s vicinity and the escape route, as well as gathering eyewitness accounts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
This high-value robbery highlights the persistent challenge of motorcycle-facilitated street crime in Karachi, despite ongoing police claims of crackdowns. Local traders’ associations have often called for enhanced patrolling and security measures in commercial zones, especially during cash-heavy business hours.
