QUETTA:  The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant weather advisory, predicting widespread rain, windstorms, and snowfall across Balochistan from December 29 to January 1, marking a sharp turn in winter conditions for the province.

According to the PMD, a fresh series of westerly winds will enter the country on December 29, affecting multiple regions. In Balochistan, the plains are expected to receive rainfall from Saturday, while substantial snowfall is forecast for the province’s northern and central hilly areas, including Quetta, Ziarat, and Chaman.

In response to the alert, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan has activated precautionary measures, warning citizens of thunderstorms, a significant temperature drop, and potential disruption. “Heavy rains are expected in the plains alongside snowfall in mountainous regions, which may lead to blocked roads and hazardous conditions,” a PDMA spokesperson stated.

The authority has strongly advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during the predicted bad weather. Tourists visiting scenic and high-altitude areas have been urged to exercise extreme caution and follow local advisories. Farmers across the province have been specifically instructed to secure their crops and align agricultural activities with the forecast to mitigate potential losses.

District administrations have been directed to remain on high alert, ensure the availability of necessary equipment, and implement advance safety measures. “Instructions have been issued to prepare for moving people to safe locations if required to deal with any emergency situation,” the PDMA notification added.

This weather system is part of a broader pattern expected to bring rain and snow to much of Pakistan next week, with Karachi also anticipating its first winter shower on December 30. However, the focus in Balochistan remains on preparedness for the combined impact of rain, snowfall, and a biting cold wave.
