QUETTA: A widespread weather system brought significant rainfall and heavy snowfall to numerous districts across Balochistan on Tuesday, plunging the province into a deep freeze and disrupting daily life in several regions.

The spell began early Tuesday, with moderate rainfall recorded in Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, and several southern coastal and western districts including Turbat, Gwadar, and Pasni. Concurrently, heavy snowfall blanketed the hilly areas of Ziarat, Muslim Bagh, Kan Mehtarzai, and the peaks around Chaman and Qila Abdullah. The picturesque town of Ziarat and surrounding mountains were transformed, covered in a thick white layer.

The precipitation led to a sharp and severe drop in temperatures across the province, intensifying the already cold winter conditions. Rainfall measurements highlighted the system’s reach, with Turbat receiving 11mm, Quetta’s Samungli area 8mm, and Panjgur 8mm. Coastal areas like Jiwani and Pasni also recorded notable rainfall.

The snowfall severely disrupted routine life in the northern and central highlands, isolating communities and hindering transportation. In response, National Highway Authority (NHA) officials, led by Chairman Agha Inayat, conducted emergency visits to critical routes including the treacherous Kan Mehtarzai and Khojak Top. Snow clearance operations were immediately launched, and salt was spread on highways to melt ice and ensure the safety and smooth flow of traffic.

Looking ahead, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted more unsettled weather for Wednesday. Rain, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, is likely in Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, and the central belt, with further snowfall expected over the mountains. Other districts of the province will experience continued cold and partly cloudy conditions. The ongoing weather pattern promises little respite from the biting cold, with authorities on alert for further disruptions.

Meanwhile the National Party leader and former Balochistan Chief Minister Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch has voiced deep concern over the surging incidents of kidnapping for ransom in Kech district, describing the situation as extremely alarming, with prominent individuals, businessmen, and their children increasingly targeted.

He pointed out that while kidnappers are abducting people on one hand, the state’s current policies are severely hindering the province’s progress on the other.

Despite the construction of several roads, many remain plagued by problems; for instance, the Turbat-to-Mand road has become a nightmare for travelers, with daily attacks occurring even though funds are available.
