Quetta to impose water emergency as waste hits 50 million gallons daily

"50 Million Gallons of Water Wasted Daily in Quetta," Says Top Official

QUETTA: Commissioner Quetta Division, Shahzeb Kakar, has announced a series of major development initiatives aimed at transforming the city. These projects, part of the ‘Quetta Package,’ focus on cleanliness, traffic, water management, and public health.

Speaking at the Hal Ahwal program at the Quetta Press Club alongside the Deputy Commissioner, Kakar highlighted the progress of the Safa Quetta project. He stated that the first phase has already improved the city’s cleanliness, and the second phase will introduce door-to-door garbage collection.

To address chronic traffic jams, the Traffic Engineering Bureau is being activated. The commissioner also announced that old public transport vehicles are being replaced, with an increase in the number of Green Bus services.

On the critical issue of water shortage, Kakar revealed a serious problem: citizens waste 50 million gallons of clean water daily on activities like vegetable cultivation and car washing. A comprehensive plan to curb this waste and prevent illegal tube wells is being finalized for the Chief Minister’s approval. Additionally, dairy farms within the city will be relocated to reduce pollution.

For public health, the commissioner acknowledged that government hospitals lack the capacity to treat drug addicts. To solve this, an MoU is being signed with private institutions for their treatment. Following this agreement, addicts found in public spaces, including city drains, will be taken into custody for rehabilitation.

Finally, Kakar mentioned that the Quetta Smart City project is bringing many services online, allowing citizens to access important facilities from their homes.
