QUETTA: In a significant blow to smuggling networks, the Collectorate of Customs Enforcement Quetta has confiscated a cache of high-end, non-customs paid vehicles valued at approximately Rs. 158 million. The seized vehicles, notably including bulletproof models, were discovered during a targeted operation on Sariab Road in the provincial capital.

Acting on verified intelligence, customs officials raided a showroom, uncovering several luxury vehicles that had been illegally imported without payment of mandatory duties and taxes. The successful operation was hailed as a testament to effective information gathering and inter-agency cooperation. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), in a statement, specifically acknowledged the “timely assistance and effective coordination” provided by Balochistan’s law enforcement agencies, which proved crucial to the operation’s success.

The seizure underscores the persistent challenge of vehicle smuggling through Balochistan’s porous borders, a trade that deprives the national exchequer of substantial revenue and distorts the local automotive market. The inclusion of bulletproof vehicles in the haul also raises concerns about the potential diversion of such secured transport to criminal or militant elements operating within the region.

The FBR reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the national economy from such illicit activities. “We are committed to ensuring the security of the national economy and eliminating smuggling and illegal trade,” the board stated, framing the Quetta operation as part of its broader mandate. This major seizure is expected to disrupt local smuggling operations temporarily and sends a strong message about increased vigilance by customs authorities in the region. Investigations are ongoing to trace the networks behind the smuggling attempt.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Quetta on a one-day visit to Balochistan on Thursday.

He was warmly received at Quetta Airport by Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, members of parliament, and senior provincial officials.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold a one-on-one meeting with Governor Balochistan, Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, at the Governor House. Discussions will focus on ongoing development projects, law and order, and overall political and administrative matters in the province.

The Governor will brief the Prime Minister on the latest situation in Balochistan and key development initiatives.
