Punjab calls in army as India releases water, floods hit multiple districts

LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved the deployment of army troops in six districts to rescue and relief operation after India released excess water into rivers flowing towards Pakistan, resulting in a rapid rise in water levels and flash flooding in low-lying areas.

According to details, a flood emergency has been declared in several districts of Punjab. The districts include Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Narowal, and Okara.

The Punjab Home Department confirmed that the district administrations had formally requested immediate military assistance to ensure the safety of lives and property, and to effectively manage emergency operations. Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and local police are already on the ground conducting relief activities.

However, with the potential for further flooding and escalating risk, the government has moved to involve the Pakistan Army for added support. A formal letter has been sent to the Federal Ministry of Interior to authorize the deployment.

The number of military personnel and resources will be decided in consultation with local administrations. If needed, Army Aviation and other specialized units will also be dispatched to the affected areas.
