LAHORE: The Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore has announced its verdict in the case of the attack on the Club Chowk Gate of the Corps Commander’s House in GOR.
Four senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been sentenced to 3 years in prison each.
The PTI leaders sentenced are: Yasmin Rashid, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, Mahmood ul Rashid, and Ejaz Chaudhry.
The court has ordered the release of Shah Mahmood Qureshi and 7 other accused persons in the case.
In total, 13 accused were convicted, while others were acquitted.
Statements of 21 accused, including Yasmin Rashid, were recorded during the trial.
The prosecution presented 56 eye-witnesses before the court.
Meanwhile, Judge Muzaffar Gul of the ATC also announced the verdict in a related case concerning Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Four accused were declared proclaimed offenders during the trial.
It is worth mentioning that on 9 May 2023, workers and supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf staged violent protests following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. During these protests, they damaged military installations, including the Corps Commander’s House in Lahore, vandalized monuments, and attacked symbols of the armed forces’ history.
The prosecution claimed that credible evidence showed instructions for attacks on military and state assets were given by the top leadership of PTI. PTI leaders such as Yasmin Rashid, Mahmood ul Rashid, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, and Ejaz Chaudhry were allegedly seen and heard leading the attackers and directing them to target specific locations.
9 May 2023 is considered one of the most serious incidents in Pakistan’s history, as supporters of a political party attacked the assets of the defense forces.
