QUETTA: A judicial magistrate has sent the prime suspect in the Balochistan honour killing case on a two-day physical remand.
Police brought the accused, Bashir Ahmed, before Judicial Magistrate Akhtar Shah. The magistrate approved the remand. Police told the court that Bashir appeared clearly in a viral video showing the killing of a man and a woman in Degari. The incident was allegedly linked to “Karo-Kari”, a tribal tradition involving accusations of illicit relations.
Police have handed Bashir over to the Serious Crime Investigation Wing (SCIW) for further interrogation.
The viral video, filmed during Eid al-Adha, showed armed men brutally shooting the couple. The footage sparked widespread outrage. It also prompted quick action from provincial authorities.
Police have arrested at least 11 suspects, including the head of the Satakzai tribe. Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti confirmed the arrests on social media platform X. He stated that operations are ongoing and pledged full justice. “The state stands with the oppressed,” he wrote.
As part of the crackdown, police also raided the Satakzai House and arrested tribal chief Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai. His arrest triggered backlash from the Sarawan tribal leadership, who called the move unjustified. They claimed the government is using the incident as a pretext to detain a tribal elder.
A day earlier, Balochistan High Court (BHC) Chief Justice Rozi Khan Bareech took a suo motu notice and summoned top officials to his chamber for today. Those present included Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Hamza Shafqat, Additional IG Admin Syed Wazir, SP SCIW Saboor, and Investigating Officer Javed Buzdar.
