Power outage in Quetta hospital forces doctors to use mobile torch for surgery

QUETTA: The doctors were compelled to perform a child’s hernia surgery under the light of mobile phone torch following a severe power outage at Sandeman Provincial Civil Hospital in provincial capital of Balochistan.

According to the local media reports, the prolonged hours and unannounced load shedding, the Children’s surgical operation theatre of the hospital was left without electricity during the procedure, creating a critical and risky situation for medical staff.

The local media reported that the hospital’s Medical Superintendent (MS) was unaware of the situation when he was contacted for comments. MS said he has no information that the operation being conducted under a mobile torch. He added that the hospital has a backup generator system in place, but it takes a few minutes to start.

The MS further stated that funds have already been provided to the Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) for the installation of an alternative power line to address the recurring issue.
