Power outage in Balochistan as electricity supply from Iran suspended

QUETTA: Electricity supply to Balochistan’s Makran Division has been disrupted following the suspension of power from neighboring Iran.

According to a Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) spokesperson, the interruption occurred due to a breakdown in the 132kV Panjgur–Mund and Polan–Jiwani transmission lines.

As a result, several key grid stations — including Mand, Turbat, Tump, Hoshab, Panjgur, Jiwani, Gwadar Deep Sea Port, the New Gwadar International Airport, Pasni, and Ormara — have been left without power.

QESCO has assured that efforts are underway to restore electricity to the region by temporarily linking Makran Division with the national grid.

QESCO officials have initiated contact with Iranian authorities to resolve the issue and restore the cross-border power supply.

The spokesperson added that normalcy will return once electricity from Iran is reinstated. In the meantime, QESCO has expressed regret over the inconvenience and appealed for cooperation from residents in affected areas.

Iran has been supplying up to 100 megawatts of electricity to Pakistan’s Balochistan province, particularly to remote areas in the Makran Division, due to the region’s distance from the national grid and lack of local generation capacity.
