Policeman martyred in the firing incident in Waziristan

ISLAMABAD: A firing incident took place in the South Waziristan area of KP causing death a policeman.

According to the security sources, the militants shot-killed a policeman in the Takai area of South Waziristan.

Two persons were injured in the firing incident.

The martyred policeman is identified with the name of Zahid Khan.

The persons sustaining injuries were shifted to the District Headquarter Hospital of WANA.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a sharp rise in targeted attacks on policemen in recent months, primarily carried out by militants affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

These assaults often involve improvised explosive devices (IEDs), direct gunfire on checkpoints, patrols, and polio vaccination teams, as well as ambushes on police vehicles and stations.

In early February 2026 alone, incidents included the killing of a policeman guarding a polio team in North Waziristan’s Mirali area, injuries to two officers in separate firing attacks in Bannu’s Wazir sub-division and DI Khan Road, and earlier deadly IED blasts in Tank district that claimed the lives of six to seven policemen, including a station house officer.

Similar patterns emerged in late 2025 and January 2026, with multiple gun attacks in districts like Lakki Marwat, Bannu, and Karak resulting in the deaths of several officers, such as four constables shot dead and ambushes killing five during patrols.

Official reports indicate a significant surge in such violence throughout 2025, with attacks on police rising dramatically compared to previous years, often in border districts near Afghanistan where militants exploit instability to target security personnel as part of their campaign against state institutions.

Security forces have responded with intelligence-based operations, eliminating dozens of TTP militants in areas like Orakzai and Khyber, yet the persistent threats continue to claim lives and injure officers on the front lines of counter-terrorism efforts.
