ISLAMABAD: Police arrested lawyer and activist Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, in a controversial tweets case on Tuesday, officials and lawyers said.
Police detained the couple near an underpass outside the Serena Hotel in Islamabad. They were on their way to the district courts along with Islamabad High Court Bar officials and other lawyers.
During the arrest, police seized mobile phones from journalists covering the incident, witnesses said.
Islamabad High Court Bar President Wajid Ali Gilani issued a video message to lawyers. He asked them to reach the Women Police Station immediately.
Gilani alleged police used force during the arrest. He said police assaulted him and the bar secretary. He added that officers smashed vehicle windows before taking Mazari and Chattha into custody.

Police did not immediately comment on the allegations.
