QUETTA: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a significant weather alert for Balochistan, forecasting a new series of widespread rains, thunderstorms, and heavy snowfall that is expected to disrupt daily life and travel across the province.
According to the alert, a strong westerly wind system is entering the region, which will trigger moderate to heavy snowfall in the mountainous upper and central districts. Key areas including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Kalat, and Pishin are expected to be significantly impacted. The PMD has warned that temperatures in these areas may drop below freezing point, and major highways could face disruptions due to the snow.
Simultaneously, a large number of other districts—from Mastung and Khuzdar in the center to Gwadar and Turbat in the south—are bracing for rain and thunderstorms. The meteorological authority has cautioned that heavy downpours at some locations may cause flash flooding in local rivers and nullahs, posing an additional risk to communities.
In response to the forecast, the provincial administration has directed residents and tourists, particularly in the upper regions, to avoid unnecessary travel during the expected snowfall period. Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions and be prepared to deal with potential emergencies arising from the severe weather conditions.
This alert marks a critical period for Balochistan, requiring coordinated efforts to mitigate the impact of the impending cold wave, transportation delays, and flood risks.
