PM Shehbaz to attend emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha on Israeli strikes

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Qatar on 15 September 2025 to attend the emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, convened with Pakistan’s participation.

The summit aims to hold consultations in the wake of recent Israeli airstrikes on Doha and the rapidly deteriorating situation in Palestine. Heads of state, government leaders, and senior officials from OIC member countries are expected to attend.

Ahead of the leaders’ summit, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar has already reached Doha to represent Pakistan in the preparatory meeting of foreign ministers.

Pakistan has strongly condemned Israeli aggression and continues to attach great importance to its relations with Qatar.
On 11 September, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid a special visit to Doha, where he met the Qatari leadership and reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for Qatar’s security and sovereignty, along with its commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, co-hosted by Pakistan, has been convened in response to Israel’s attack on Doha and the rapidly evolving situation in Palestine—including Israel’s attempts to seize Gaza, expand settlements in the West Bank, and forcibly displace Palestinians.

Diplomatic sources said that more than 50 OIC member states are expected to participate. Leaders may also discuss advancing the cause of Palestinian statehood at the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly.

Confirmed participants include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, while Turkish media report that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also likely to attend. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Doha on Sunday, a day ahead of the summit.

It remains uncertain whether Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will attend. However, he visited Qatar earlier this week to express solidarity.

Monday’s Doha summit is expected to rally support for Qatar following last week’s Israeli strike on the Gulf state that targeted Hamas leadership.

A draft resolution prepared for leaders condemns Israel’s actions, calling them a destabilizing escalation, and affirms that states oppose Israel’s plans to impose “new realities” in the region. However, according to Reuters, the draft does not propose any diplomatic or economic measures against Israel, though amendments may be made before leaders convene.

The attack has pushed Washington’s Gulf allies to close ranks, increasing pressure on the UAE, which normalized relations with Israel in 2020 under the Abraham Accords.
