BAKU: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif once again showed gratitude to former US President Donald Trump for his “bold and decisive leadership” in helping broker a ceasefire between Pakistan and India during their brief conflict in May this year.
The prime minister said President Trump’s leadership played a “crucial role in restoring peace in South Asia,” preventing a potential escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
“It was President Trump’s bold and decisive leadership that brought about the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, restoring peace in South Asia and saving millions of lives,” the premier said.
In this regard, Sharif reasserted Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, saying the country sought harmony and cooperation, much like its “Azerbaijani and Turkish brothers.”
He underlined that Pakistan would never compromise on its sovereignty or territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the prime minister recalled that Azerbaijani and Turkish military contingents had proudly joined Pakistani forces in Islamabad on August 14 during the ‘Marka-i-Haq’ celebrations, indicating what the military described as a “historic victory” in the recent conflict with India.
PM Shehbaz also paid tribute to Azerbaijan’s struggle and eventual victory in liberating Karabakh five years ago, lauding President Ilham Aliyev’s “visionary leadership.”
He said Pakistan had stood “like a rock” beside Azerbaijan throughout its campaign.
“Azerbaijan’s victory was a glorious vindication of a just cause and a beacon of hope for nations striving for sovereignty, including the people of Gaza and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Moreover, the prime minister thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for their roles in facilitating peace between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban authorities.
On the other hand, as the PM Shehbaz is in Baku, he chaired a Federal Cabinet virtual meeting before the approval of 27th Constitutional Amendment from the Cabinet.
So far, Shehbaz arrived in Baku on Friday for a two-day official visit at President Aliyev’s invitation to attend the Victory Day celebrations.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that Pakistani troops and JF-17 Thunder fighter jets participated in the parade, marking the growing defence ties between Islamabad and Baku.
