PM Shehbaz orders rail link to Reko Diq by 2028

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to link Reko Diq with Pakistan’s railway network by 2028. He issued these instructions during a meeting on railway upgrades and Reko Diq’s connection with the national rail line.

He ordered the formation of an inter-ministerial committee to manage financing for Pakistan Railways’ development. The committee will prepare and present recommendations on funding needs, including the extension to Rekodiq.

Officials briefed the prime minister on the upgradation of ML-1 and ML-3 lines and overall railway development to support future transport and cargo demands.

The prime minister said Pakistan Railways plays a vital role in the country’s economy and connectivity. He called it a cheap, fast, and environmentally friendly transport option.

He added that linking Reko Diq with the railway will boost Balochistan’s mining sector and create jobs for local people.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar, State Minister for Railways Bilal Kayani, SAPM Tariq Fatemi, and senior officials attended the meeting.
