PM directs withdrawal of unapproved Senate amendment on PM’s immunity

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed his party’s senators to immediately withdraw an amendment related to the immunity of the prime minister that was recently presented in the Senate without prior approval from the federal cabinet.

The prime minister said he was informed that a few senators from his party had introduced a clause concerning the prime minister’s immunity in the Senate.

The proposed amendment, he clarified, was not part of the draft bill approved by the cabinet. In this regard, Prime Minister Sharif focused on that all legislative measures must strictly adhere to the approved governmental process.

He said he had instructed the senators to withdraw the amendment without delay to ensure full transparency and procedural compliance.

“The honourable senators acted out of sincerity, and I thank them for their commitment. However, I have directed them to immediately take back the amendment,” the prime minister said.

In this sense, confirming his stance on accountability and the rule of law, Prime Minister Sharif stated that an elected prime minister is answerable both to the law and to the people.

“A democratically elected prime minister is certainly accountable before the law and the court of the public,” he said, underlining his government’s respect for legal and constitutional principles.

Furthermore, the proposed clause on immunity had stirred political discussion, with some quarters questioning its timing and intent.

However, by directing its withdrawal, the prime minister sought to reinforce his administration’s commitment to transparency and due process in governance.
