Plane with 242 onboard crashes near Ahmedabad airport in India

Air India plane has crashed at Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat with 242 passengers on board on board on Thursday.

According to the news agency ANI, the plane caught fire after crashing, and fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, said fire officer Jayesh Khadia.

“A plane crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. It is not yet clear what type of plane it was,” said Ahmedabad police commissioner, GS Malik.

Air India confirmed the incident in a post on X, tweeting, “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today.”

The airline added it was “ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”

Air India confirms nationalities of those on board crashed flight, including 169 Indians, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian.

Terming the incident extremely unfortunate and tragic, the Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai has instructed immediate rescue and relief operations, as well as arrangements for a green corridor to swiftly transport injured passengers for treatment, and to ensure all treatment facilities in hospitals are provided at a war footing.
