QUETTA: In a major blow to fuel smuggling networks, the Pakistan Coast Guards (PCG) have intercepted and seized a staggering 1,764,615 litres of illegal Iranian diesel in a series of targeted operations across Balochistan over the past month. The total value of the confiscated diesel and the vehicles used in its transportation is estimated at approximately Rs 487.03 million.
According to a PCG press release issued on Tuesday, the successful seizures were the result of coordinated, intelligence-based operations conducted at key strategic points. Major interceptions occurred at road check posts in Uthal, Gwadar, and Pasni, with PCG units also active along sea routes to thwart maritime smuggling attempts. Officials reported that the vast majority of the diesel—1,746,615 litres—was recovered from land routes, while 18,000 litres were seized during operations at sea. The illicit cargo was en route from Balochistan to Karachi when it was intercepted.
The smuggled diesel, along with the trucks and oil tankers used to transport it, has been taken into official custody. Investigations are now underway to trace the supply chains and identify the individuals behind the large-scale smuggling operation.
The PCG statement underscored the force’s ongoing and determined campaign against all forms of smuggling, which undermines the legal economy and causes significant revenue losses to the national exchequer. The massive seizure highlights the continued challenges posed by the illegal cross-border fuel trade and the authorities’ efforts to secure the province’s extensive coastline and highways. The Coast Guards reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining these operations, stating that such actions are vital for protecting the country’s economic stability and strengthening national resources.
