ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United States have launched the 13th edition of their joint counterterrorism exercise, Inspired Gambit 2026, to strengthen interoperability and share counterterrorism expertise, the Pakistani military said on Saturday.
The two-week exercise involves troops from the Pakistani and US armies. Officials from both sides attended the opening ceremony at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Pabbi, in northwest Pakistan, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The drill aims to enhance mutual understanding through the exchange of counterterrorism experience. It also seeks to refine tactics, techniques, and procedures critical for effective counterterrorism operations.
ISPR said the exercise places special focus on marksmanship in urban warfare and on understanding each other’s operational doctrines and best practices.
The military said joint training exercises play a vital role in addressing evolving security threats. They help improve professional standards and strengthen the ability of both forces to operate in complex counterterrorism environments.
Pakistan and the United States have maintained long-standing relations that include security cooperation, economic engagement, and people-to-people ties. While relations have faced strains in the past, particularly over regional security and Afghanistan, both sides have continued engagement through military contacts and counterterrorism cooperation.
In recent years, Islamabad and Washington have worked to stabilize ties by focusing on shared interests such as regional stability, trade, counterterrorism, and climate resilience. Defense cooperation remains a key pillar of the relationship.
ISPR said Inspired Gambit 2026 reflects the continued commitment of both countries to joint efforts for peace and stability.
