Pakistan to reopen Torkham and Chaman border

QUETTA: After consultations with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan has decided to reopen the Torkham and Chaman border crossings on humanitarian grounds.

This step has been taken in view of the severe shortage of food and medicines in Afghanistan caused by the closure of trade routes for the past 50 days.

The Ministry has written to Federal Board of Revenue and the Directorate General of Transit Trade in Karachi, requesting full facilitation for the movement of United Nations humanitarian cargo to Afghanistan.

According to the letter, it has been decided to allow the phased clearance of containers belonging to UNICEF, World Food Programme, and United Nations Population Fund.

In the first phase, food consignments will be cleared, followed by medicines and medical equipment in the second phase.

In the third phase, other essential items, including educational kits for students and teachers, will be allowed.

The relevant authorities have been directed to complete all necessary formalities so that these consignments can be transported to Afghanistan via the Chaman and Torkham routes.

It is worth noting that due to heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, all trade crossings have remained closed for all types of movement since 12 October 2025.

The Torkham and Chaman border crossings are key trade routes between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

These crossings facilitate the movement of goods, including food, medicines, and other essential supplies, between the two countries.

Due to recent tensions, all trade at these borders was halted, causing shortages in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani government has now decided to reopen these routes on humanitarian grounds, allowing phased clearance of relief supplies and essential goods to support the Afghan population.

Trade through these borders is expected to resume gradually, ensuring smooth transit and addressing urgent needs.
