CHAMAN: Fresh clashes erupted between Pakistani and Afghan forces at the Chaman border and Zhob sectors between Balochistan and Kandahar after Afghan troops opened unprovoked fire, which was successfully repulsed.
Afghan Taliban fighters unprovoked attacks on civilian areas and Pakistani border posts prompted a strong and immediate response from Pakistan’s security forces, which damaged several Afghan military positions.
According to security sources, Pakistani forces retaliated with full force, destroying multiple Taliban positions across the border. The situation in Zhob remains tense as Taliban elements and Afghan border forces continue sporadic firing into Pakistani territory. Pakistani troops remain on high alert, and heavy exchanges of fire were reported overnight.
Indiscriminate firing on civilians in Chaman
Late Tuesday night, Afghan Taliban fighters opened indiscriminate fire on civilian areas near the Chaman border under the cover of darkness. The sudden assault injured a child and two other civilians. Local authorities confirmed that the attack caused widespread panic in residential areas, forcing the closure of schools and other educational institutions in Chaman.
Pakistani forces hit back hard
In retaliation, the Frontier Corps (FC) and other security units launched a coordinated counteroffensive, using artillery and heavy weaponry to target Taliban strongholds. Security sources reported that at least 20 Taliban fighters, described as “terrorists linked to Fitna al-Hindustan,” were killed, while more than 25 others were wounded. Several Taliban fighters reportedly fled, abandoning their positions and leaving bodies behind. Multiple Taliban checkpoints and posts were completely destroyed.
Human rights violations and Taliban’s true face
Experts condemned the Taliban’s attacks on civilian populations, calling them blatant violations of international humanitarian law. They noted that targeting education and public infrastructure exposes the Taliban’s hostility toward “learning, enlightenment, and progress.” The closure of schools in Chaman, they said, highlights the group’s anti-education ideology.
Government and military response
While official statements are still awaited, military sources emphasized that Pakistan will respond decisively to any act of aggression and that protecting civilian lives remains the country’s top priority. All border units have been placed on high alert, and the situation is being continuously monitored.
Rising regional tensions
This escalation comes at a time when Pakistan-Afghanistan relations are already strained. Recent weeks have seen a surge in cross-border terrorism and infiltration attempts, prompting Pakistan to repeatedly raise concerns with Kabul.
