Pakistan Predicts Prolonged Rains in Balochistan

QUETTA: Pakistan’s weather authorities have forecast strong and prolonged winter rains across drought-hit districts of Balochistan. The first major spell is expected between 6 and 10 December as a powerful westerly system enters the province.

Officials said the rains will continue at intervals throughout the month. They expect a clear improvement in the drought situation from early December.

The Met Office said the incoming system will bring heavy rain with thunderstorms. Experts believe this will mark the first major wet spell of the winter season.

The department said the rains will provide relief to districts badly affected by drought. Zhob, Sherani, Musakhel, Barkhan, Kohlu, Sibi, Lasbela and Awaran are likely to see significant improvement.

Kech, Gwadar, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Killa Saifullah, Chagai, Nushki, Washuk and Mastung are also expected to benefit.

The Met Office also predicted snowfall in upper Balochistan. It warned that the snowfall may disrupt traffic and daily life in high-altitude areas as temperatures drop further.

Officials said the rains will support rain-fed crops and help recharge groundwater. They expect the weather system to ease the impact of the ongoing drought and improve living conditions across much of the province.
