Pakistan, Iran review border security mechanisms

RAWALPINDI: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi held key meetings with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership on Monday during his official visit to the country. The two sides held a constructive exchange of views and reviewed the existing border security mechanisms in a bid to further increase bilateral coordination and operational effectiveness.

The ISPR stated that the meeting focused on the prevailing geo-strategic environment, with a particular focuses on shared security challenges faced by both nations.

In this regard, General Munir asserted that Pakistan and Iran are brotherly nations with close ties grounded in shared history, culture, and religion.

The Iranian foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability, acknowledging the country’s constructive role in addressing regional challenges.

In addition, Araghchi also met with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in separate meetings held in Islamabad. There were discussions with the top civilian leadership focused on regional security developments and strengthening of bilateral ties, with particular reference to the rising tensions between Pakistan and India following the recent Pahalgam incident.

Furthermore, President Zardari welcomed the visiting dignitary and focused on the importance of close cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad to ensure peace and prosperity across the region.

“Both countries must collaborate to uphold regional harmony and development,” the President said, according to an official press release.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dismissed India’s accusations regarding the Pahalgam incident as baseless and politically motivated. He offered Pakistan’s full cooperation in an international investigation to uncover the facts.

The premier further stated that such tactics were intended to divert global attention from the Kashmir dispute, which he described as the core issue behind instability in South Asia.

Additionally, both sides discussed the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, condemning the ongoing violence and human rights violations perpetrated by Israeli forces in Gaza and the West Bank.
