DOHA: There is a possibility that the trophy controversy may resurface during the closing ceremony of the Asia Cup Rising Stars, currently underway in Doha, Qatar.
According to sources, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi will serve as the chief guest at the event.
The final of the Asia Cup Rising Stars is scheduled to be played on November 23 in Doha, and the Indian team is expected to be one of the finalists.
Sources further indicate that, similar to the main Asia Cup, the final may once again feature Pakistan Shaheens against India A.
It is worth recalling that during the Asia Cup closing ceremony in September, the Indian team refused to receive the trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi.
As a result, the trophy still remains at the ACC office, and the Council has invited India to attend a ceremony and officially collect it.
It is worth mentioning that the controversy had raised in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 final when India beat Pakistan but team India refused to collect trophy from the President ACC Mohsin Naqvi on the basis of his Pakistani ethnicity.
The Ceremony remained delayed for one hour and finally the trophy was shifted to the office of the ACC and it was not handed over to team India.
Since then, the BCCI insisted on many occasions that the ACC president should hand over the trophy.
But Mohsin Naqvi persisted that if India are to get the trophy, the skipper should come to the office and collect the trophy.
The matter remained disputed till the conduction of the ICC’s meeting, however, some of the other cricket boards vow to mediate and resolve many such disputes with peace.
The matter of handing over the trophy was also negotiated in the ICC’s meeting being held last week.
