WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump has declined to intervene in the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, instead praising Islamabad’s approach and leadership in the region.
Speaking to media outside the White House, President Trump fielded questions regarding the Pak-Afghan war. When asked directly whether he would intervene in the conflict, Trump responded with clear support for Pakistan’s position.
“I would, but you know, I have very good relations with Pakistan,” Trump stated.
The US President went on to praise Pakistan’s handling of the situation, saying, “I think Pakistan is moving forward in a very wonderful way. Pakistan is doing well with Afghanistan. I will not interfere.”
Trump specifically commended Pakistan’s leadership, noting, “Pakistan has a great Prime Minister and General, great leadership. These are two personalities whom I really respect a lot.”
In addition to comments on the Pak-Afghan situation, President Trump also addressed the ongoing situation with Iran. He reiterated his firm stance on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, stating, “Iran cannot have nuclear weapons.”
While expressing dissatisfaction with Iran, Trump indicated a preference for diplomatic engagement. “I am not happy with Iran but more negotiations are expected by Friday. I want to make a deal with Iran,” he said.
The President acknowledged the potential need for force, adding, “He said he does not want to use force against Iran, but sometimes force has to be used.”
Trump’s remarks signal a non-interventionist US posture regarding the Pakistan-Afghanistan theater while maintaining pressure on Iran through diplomatic channels.
