Pakistan, China to hold strategic talks in Islamabad ahead of SCO Summit

ISLAMABAD: A new round of the Pakistan-China Strategic Dialogue will take place in Islamabad on August 20–21. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend. Both countries aim to strengthen their partnership amid changing regional dynamics.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has not confirmed Wang Yi’s arrival yet. However, it is expected to do so during its weekly press briefing. Chinese media has already reported his visit. It will take place ahead of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s trip to Tianjin on August 31 for the Shanghai Cooperation Summit.

This dialogue continues the Strategic Dialogue series that began in March 2019 in Beijing. The first round was held between Pakistan’s then-Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Wang Yi.

During the visit, Wang Yi will meet Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Talks will focus on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), economic cooperation, defense ties, regional security, and shared interests.

This visit comes at a tense time in South Asia. India recently launched an unprovoked missile attack on Pakistan. China supported Pakistan and praised the Pakistan Air Force’s response.

Before this trip, Wang Yi met Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, in Beijing. He appreciated the military’s role in protecting Pakistan’s interests and its strong ties with China.

Pakistan and China continue to back each other on key issues. Their visit underscores the strength of their all-weather strategic partnership in the face of regional and global challenges.
