Pakistan and Armenia agree to diplomatic relations

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Armenia formally established diplomatic relations, indicating a massive development in their bilateral ties, the Foreign Office (FO) declared.

In this regard, the major breakthrough came after decades of estrangement, during which Islamabad refrained from establishing ties with Yerevan owing to its longstanding support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

As per the Foreign Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Armenian counterpart, Ararat Mirzoyan, signed and exchanged a joint communiqué in Tianjin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

It further noted that the two leaders expressed a desire to increase cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral fora, with the aim of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity for their peoples.

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Dar expressed satisfaction at the development. Armenia’s Foreign Minister Mirzoyan also welcomed the move, calling it “a major step” and mentioning both governments’ readiness to foster “mutually beneficial cooperation” and “constructive engagement in multilateral fora.”

The diplomatic breakthrough follows recent regional efforts toward reconciliation. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had welcomed the peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia, brokered in Washington under the auspices of US President Donald Trump.
