ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Navy has launched emergency relief operations in Sri Lanka following the destruction caused by Cyclone Datwah and subsequent heavy rains.
Pakistan Navy ship PNS Saif was docked at Colombo Port to participate in the International Fleet Review 2025 when the powerful cyclone struck, triggering severe flooding and widespread damage across several regions of Sri Lanka.
Pakistan Navy personnel immediately initiated relief efforts to assist affected communities. A Navy spokesperson said that PNS Saif handed over essential relief supplies to Sri Lankan authorities to support ongoing rescue and rehabilitation operations and ensure timely assistance to displaced families.
Furthermore, the relief items delivered included food supplies, ready-to-eat meals (MREs), dry rations, first-aid kits, emergency medicines and basic equipment.
The spokesperson added that the Pakistan Navy will continue to provide additional support depending on the evolving situation.
“This timely assistance indicates the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to international humanitarian responsibilities, its support for regional peace and stability, and its solidarity with friendly nations in times of hardship,” the official statement said.
Meanwhile, on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also completed preparations to send the first major consignment of humanitarian aid along with a Pakistan Army search and rescue team to Sri Lanka.
The initial shipment will comprise 100 tons of relief goods, including rescue boats, pumps, life jackets, tents, blankets, milk, food supplies and medicines.
The aid and personnel will be transported on a Pakistan Air Force C-130 aircraft from Nur Khan Air Base. NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider will oversee the departure and ensure smooth coordination.
The relief package will also include field hospitals to support medical needs in flood-affected areas.
