Key Pak-Iran Border officials meet in Taftan

Taftan – A crucial meeting took place between Pakistani and Iranian border officials at the Taftan crossing, where detailed discussions were held on security, border management, and the facilitation of pilgrims.

Both sides agreed to strengthen cross-border cooperation, enhance surveillance and patrolling, and take strict measures to curb drug smuggling.

One of the important matters discussed was the potential opening of the Rajay crossing point, aimed at providing ease of movement for traders and local communities.

Officials acknowledged the significance of smooth and secure travel for pilgrims and made key decisions to improve their safety and support.

The Taftan border remains a vital trade route between Pakistan and Iran, especially for the exchange of petroleum products, fresh produce, and other goods.

Discussions around opening additional crossing points like Rajay are expected to boost regional commerce and ease congestion at existing entry points.

Over the past few decades, the Taftan border has served as a critical gateway for trade between Pakistan and Iran.

Historically, this route facilitated the exchange of petroleum products, construction materials, fresh fruits and vegetables, and livestock.

Despite facing occasional disruptions due to security concerns and political tensions, trade continued informally and formally, often driven by cross-border tribal and local economies.

The barter system was also commonly used in earlier years due to banking restrictions and sanctions on Iran.

In recent years, both countries have made efforts to regularize and expand bilateral trade through Taftan by improving infrastructure, setting up joint border markets, and enhancing customs operations.
