Pak asserts ‘No Compromise on Sovereignty’ after clashes with Afghan forces

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that Pakistan would make “no compromise” on its sovereignty after security forces destroyed several Afghan border posts in response to cross-border attacks by the Afghan Taliban.

As per the state media PTV, security forces captured 19 Afghan border posts from where, government representatives said, attacks were being launched into Pakistani territory.

“The Afghan Taliban present at the posts have been killed and the rest fled for their lives,” security sources told PTV, adding that fires erupted at several posts during the overnight operation.

In this regard, the Radio Pakistan reported that the Pakistani Army destroyed the Taliban’s Manojba camp battalion headquarters, Jandusar Post, Turkmenzai Camp, and Kharchar Fort.

President Zardari said Pakistan remained committed to protecting its sovereignty and national interests.

He called it “unfortunate” that the Afghan interim government had “turned away from the just struggle of occupied Kashmir” and urged Kabul to take “concrete and verifiable action” against anti-Pakistan terrorist elements operating from its soil.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned what he termed as “provocation by Afghanistan in Pakistan’s border areas.”

Moreover, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also lauded the military’s “prompt and effective” response, calling Afghan fire on civilians a “blatant violation of international law.”
