Fatal Accidents Continue in Balochistan’s Coal Mines, 51 Dead in 2025, Report
A grim pattern of fatal accidents continues to plague coal mines in Balochistan, with official statistics revealing a high death toll for the first eight months of this year.
According to the provincial Department of Minerals, from January to August, 51 miners have been killed in various incidents. These accidents include poisonous gas leaks, gas explosions, landslides, and trolley mishaps. In the same period, more than 30 miners have been injured.
The coal mines in the districts of Quetta, Daki, and Harnai were reported as the most dangerous, witnessing the highest number of accidents.
The report highlights a specific tragedy on January 9th in the Sanjedi area of Quetta, where a gas explosion killed 12 miners. An investigation into that incident found the mine’s owner and contractor responsible for the safety failure.
In response to the ongoing crisis, labor leaders from the Pakistan Coal Mines Labor Federation in Balochistan have urgently demanded that the government and mine operators ensure proper safety arrangements and implement mandatory daily inspections of all coal mines.
