Hesson breaks silence on team combination, what is Pak planning in Dambulla?

DAMBULLA: The Head Coach Mike Hesson moved decisively to silence mounting speculation surrounding the national side’s team combination and player roles.

The Hesson dismissed widespread rumors about possible changes in batting order and bowling strategy. He expressed confidence that the team would deliver a strong performance and that players would rise to the occasion in line with their capabilities.

“We are focused on execution rather than speculation,” Hesson said, maintaining a composed and diplomatic tone. “The expectation is simple to perform according to our strengths.”

Hesson made it clear that one or two early dismissals in recent matches do not justify altering a player’s position. He focused on continuity and stability as key elements of the team’s approach moving forward.

He described Usman Tariq as an important component of both the side’s attacking and defensive strategies.

“We are moving forward and not dwelling on the past,” he added, signaling management’s intent to maintain trust in the selected players.

The head coach also shed light on Babar Azam’s role in the ongoing World Cup campaign. The former captain has been assigned a specific tactical responsibility within the batting lineup.

“He has the ability to accelerate his strike rate whenever the situation demands,” Hesson stated, subtly reinforcing confidence in one of Pakistan’s most experienced batters.

When asked about pitch conditions at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Hesson noted that spin-friendly surfaces have influenced team planning. While additional spinners are being considered in the combination, he clarified that this should not be interpreted as a lack of faith in pace spearhead Naseem Shah.

Meanwhile, young opener Saim Ayub has earned the management’s backing after delivering promising performances in the previous series. Hesson confirmed that consistency remains central to their selection philosophy.
