ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has dismissed reports circulating on social and informal platforms regarding possible snowfall in Pakistan’s plain areas, describing such claims as irresponsible and baseless. The authority has urged the public to rely only on verified and official sources for weather-related information.
As per the experts from the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), a seasonal increase in cold intensity is expected during the last 15 days of January, which is in line with normal winter patterns.
However, snowfall is forecast only in the country’s mountainous regions, not in the plains. The NDMA stated that a new system of westerly winds is expected to enter the country from January 18.
The snowfall is likely in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These regions typically experience snow during this period, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
In addition to snowfall in the northern highlands, the arrival of westerly winds may also bring rainfall to several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, western Balochistan, and the Potohar region.
The NDMA indicated that from next week, different cities may experience spells of rain, while snowfall will remain limited to higher elevations. Additionally, for the next three to four days, most plain areas of the country are expected to experience cold and dry weather.
This may lead to a slight increase in cold intensity. The NDMA further warned that Punjab and Sindh’s plain areas could face a severe cold wave, accompanied by dense fog, which may disrupt daily routines and travel.
The NDMA confirmed its commitment to monitoring weather developments and coordinating with provincial and local authorities to ensure preparedness across the country.
