WASHINGTON − Two National Guard members were killed in a shooting on Wednesday near the White House in Washington, DC, US officials said. A suspect is in custody.
The deaths were confirmed by West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey. Both victims were members of the West Virginia National Guard.
The White House was locked down after the shooting. President Donald Trump is at his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Two troops of the National Guard were shot near the White House in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, according to Trump administration officials.
The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the shooting in official statement.
“Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C.,” Noem said, adding that her department is working with local law enforcement to gather more information.
Meanwhile the DC police told the media, that a suspect is in police custody which injured in firing. Investigation underway to the incident.
The press secretary in a statement said that the president Donald trump were briefed on the incident.
On Truth Social president Trump stated that ” The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!”
