MQM MPA calls for Prayers After False Reports of Moin Khan’s Death

ISLAMABAD: MQM leader Saber Qaimkhani on Friday mistakenly called for prayers in the Sindh Assembly after believing false reports that former Pakistan cricketer Moin Khan had died.

Qaimkhani made the request during the session, prompting members to immediately stop him. The Speaker informed the house that the reports were fake and confirmed that Moin Khan was alive and in good health. Qaimkhani later apologised to the assembly.

False claims of Moin Khan’s death had circulated widely on social media earlier in the week. The posts alleged that the 54-year-old former wicketkeeper had died of a heart attack.

The rumour spread rapidly across platforms. In response, Moin Khan released a video rejecting the claims and criticising those responsible.

“I want to assure all my fans and followers that, thank God, I am perfectly healthy and enjoying life,” he said. He condemned the rumour as “extremely irresponsible.”

In reality, it was 65-year-old senior cricketer Moin Khan Rajput from Hyderabad who had passed away. Social media users mistakenly shared photos of the former Test cricketer instead of Rajput, triggering widespread confusion.

Khan’s video quickly went viral on X, where users expressed strong anger at those spreading the misinformation.

In a second clip, recorded while he was driving, Khan again called out the individual behind the hoax, saying they had acted with “total irresponsibility.”

Moin Khan, one of Pakistan’s most recognised cricketers, played 69 Tests and 219 ODIs and was part of the 1992 World Cup-winning squad. He remains a prominent figure in the sport and is currently associated with the Quetta Gladiators.
