ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Friday suspended mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi for an indefinite period to maintain law and order ahead of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) rally “Ya Aqsa Million March”.
The notification issued by the federal Ministry of Interior said that the decision has been taken in view of security concerns and the prevailing law and order situation in the twin cities. The notification stated that mobile data and internet services would remain suspended from tonight until further orders. However, landline telephone services and Wi-Fi networks will continue to operate as usual.
Sources said the Interior Ministry has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and mobile service providers to ensure immediate compliance with the order.
Security officials explained that the move was prompted by intelligence reports about sensitive gatherings, potential protests, and the risk of large crowds forming in certain areas. The suspension, they said, is a preventive measure aimed at maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of citizens.
The decision has drawn concern from the public, particularly students, freelancers, and professionals whose work depends on uninterrupted internet access. Many have described the shutdown as a major disruption to education and business activities in the region.
