BAGHDAD: The diplomatic facilities belonging to the United States and the United Arab Emirates in Iraq came under attack after missiles and a suspected drone strike hit areas near the compounds.
As per the international media reports, a missile struck near the United States Embassy compound in Baghdad, located inside the heavily fortified Green Zone of the Iraqi capital.
The impact caused smoke to billow from inside the compound, though initial reports did not confirm any casualties or injuries.
Meanwhile, another report by the French news agency suggested that the incident may have involved a drone strike rather than a missile attack.
Due to these differing reports, the exact nature of the attack remains unclear, and investigations are currently underway to determine how the strike was carried out.
The United Arab Emirates’ consulate building in Iraq’s Kurdistan region was also targeted in another attack.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates strongly condemned the attack, stating that targeting diplomatic missions constitutes a clear violation of international law and established diplomatic norms.
The ministry emphasized that such attacks represent dangerous provocations and could pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability. The statement further stressed the importance of protecting diplomatic missions and personnel under international agreements.
The UAE government called on Iraqi authorities to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the incidents.
It also urged officials to identify those responsible for the attacks and bring them to justice in accordance with the law.
