Met Office Warns of Flash Floods as Balochistan Records Heavy Rain

QUETTA: The Balochistan province has received 10mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, Pakistan’s Met Office said in a report on Thursday.

According the Pakistan’s Meteorological Department, Ziarat received maximum 37mm rainfall, Zhob received 19 mm.

Barkhan received 15 mm in 24 hours till 8:00 in the morning, while Kalat received 13 mm, Sibi 9 mm, Khuzdar 7 mm, Turbat 6 mm, and Pishin and Chaman 5 mm each.

The Met Office forecast widespread rain, windstorms, and thunderstorms across the country over the next 24 hours. It warned of isolated heavy downpours and possible hailstorms in several regions.

Forecasters said Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will receive rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are likely to see scattered rain and thunderstorms, mainly in the evening and night.

The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods in northeastern Balochistan, including Zhob, Musakhel, and Dera Bugti. It said Dera Ghazi Khan may also receive heavy rains, while local streams in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could overflow.

Authorities cautioned that strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms could damage vulnerable structures such as الكهرباء poles, billboards, and solar panels. They also warned of potential damage to standing crops in Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Islamabad is expected to see partly cloudy weather, with a 30% chance of rain and thunderstorms in the evening or night.

Southern parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are likely to receive widespread rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy showers and hailstorms. Northern areas may see rainfall and snowfall over higher mountains.

Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan are expected to receive significant rainfall, while Lahore and Rawalpindi may experience isolated thunderstorms and strong winds.

Sindh, including Karachi and Hyderabad, is likely to see intermittent rain and thunderstorms, with a chance of heavy downpours and hail in southern areas.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are forecast to have cloudy weather with scattered rain and thunderstorms, along with snowfall in mountainous regions during the evening and night.
