Major progress in Punjab government's bike subsidy project

LAHORE: The Punjab government has finalized a major subsidy program aimed at providing financial relief to motorcyclists across the province, according to official sources.

The initiative is expected to benefit millions of citizens who rely on motorcycles as their primary mode of transportation.

In this regard, the sources within the Excise Department revealed that a summary seeking approval for Rs24 billion has been forwarded to the Punjab Finance Department. The proposal has also been sent to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for final approval.

In this sense, approximately 12.5 million motorcyclists are expected to receive financial assistance. The government estimates that each registered biker could receive a monthly subsidy of up to Rs2,000.

This measure is designed to ease the burden of rising fuel costs, particularly for low- and middle-income individuals who depend on motorcycles for daily commuting.

The initiative is being viewed as part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to mitigate the impact of inflation and support vulnerable segments of society.

So far, more than 8 million motorcyclists have already completed their registration for the program. The development comes at a time when fuel prices continue to put pressure on household budgets, prompting governments to explore targeted relief measures.

However, officials have focused on that the final rollout remains subject to approval by the chief minister and allocation of funds by the finance department. Further details regarding the mechanism of subsidy distribution are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing public concerns through structured and inclusive economic policies.
