ISLAMABAD: The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, formally announced Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the Leader of the Opposition during a sitting of the lower house of Parliament.
The announcement indicated an important political development as the National Assembly convened to address both parliamentary leadership matters and legislative business.
The session began under the chairmanship of Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. At the outset, the Speaker informed the House that the Question Hour would not be held for the day.
In this sense, he called the Chief Whip, Aamir Dogar, to his chamber to complete formalities related to the notification of the opposition leader. The Speaker made the official announcement, confirming Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s appointment as the Leader of the Opposition.
The members of the House were informed of the decision, which brings clarity to the opposition’s leadership structure within the National Assembly.
Furthermore, the session featured the introduction of several important legislative measures. Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, presented the Pakistan Nursing Council Ordinance in the House.
The ordinance aims to address regulatory and administrative matters related to the nursing profession in the country. In this regard, the Law Minister also tabled multiple amendment bills, reflecting the government’s ongoing legislative agenda.
These included the Export Development Fund (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Imports and Exports (Amendment) Bill, the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Amendment Bill, and the Life Insurance (Nationalization) Amendment Bill.
The appointment of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition is expected to play a key role in shaping parliamentary debate and oversight, as the National Assembly continues its legislative work in the coming sessions.
