LUAWMS storms into CM Cup semi-finals after 7-wicket victory

QUETTA: Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS) has secured a spot in the semi-finals of the CM Cup cricket tournament, part of a major inter-university sports festival launched by the Balochistan government.

The university’s cricket team first defeated Bolan Medical College by 20 runs. They continued their winning streak in the quarter-finals, securing a victory against Balochistan University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Khuzdar, by 7 wickets. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdul Malik Tareen congratulated the team and expressed hope for their strong performance in the upcoming semi-finals.

In a separate match Turbat University football team has secured a major victory, winning the championship.

The final match against Mir Chakar Khan Rind University Sibi was a thrilling contest, ending in a 2-2 draw after regular time. The title was decided by a tense penalty shootout, which Turbat University won with a narrow 8-7 margin.

Following the win, the university’s Vice Chancellor, teachers, and students all extended their heartfelt congratulations to the winning team.

The university administration stated that this success is a reflection of the students’ hard work, strong teamwork, and commitment to promoting sports.

This sporting action comes as the provincial government kicks off a large-scale Inter-University Mega Sports Tournament, scheduled to run from October 1st to 7th. The event was announced on Monday by Adviser to the Chief Minister for Sports, Meena Majeed Baloch, alongside Secretary Sports, Dura Baloch.

Meena Majeed stated that the primary aim of the tournament is to bring out the talents of young players. She revealed that a total of 1,420 athletes from across Balochistan are participating, including more than 500 female players. The sports department will bear all expenses for the participants.

The tournament will feature a variety of sports, including cricket, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and football. The Adviser also announced plans for future sports festivals in the Loralai, Kalat, and Rakhshan divisions.

On the same occasion, Secretary Sports Dura Baloch outlined the government’s financial commitment, disclosing an annual sports budget of Rs 300 million. In a significant move for long-term athlete development, she also announced the establishment of an endowment fund for players and the recruitment of 86 new coaches to provide training in schools.
