Levies foil major power cable theft attempt in Kalat

KALAT: The timely operation by the Levies Force failed an attempt to steal electricity cables worth millions of rupees from WAPDA poles in Kalat city. Only one suspect was arrested following an exchange of fire, while two others managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

The WAPDA officials also seized a motorcycle used in the crime along with 160 rolls of stolen power cables.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Aftab Ahmed Lassi and led by Deputy Commissioner Kalat, Captain (Retd) Jameel Baloch.

In this regard, the suspects opened fire, prompting a brief exchange of gunfire. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Levies officials managed to arrest one suspect on the spot, while his accomplices fled.

Furthermore, the arrested suspect was found in possession of a motorcycle and a large quantity of electricity cables, which were taken into custody.

The government representatives confirmed that the situation is fully under control and that an investigation is underway to trace the remaining suspects.

The recovered cables are estimated to be worth several million rupees, highlighting the scale of the attempted theft.

Moreover, Deputy Commissioner Jameel Baloch praised the efforts of the Levies Force, commending their swift response and professionalism in preventing what could have been a major loss of public property.

He described the operation as a vital success and assured that the administration is determined to combat criminal activities in the region.

He further focused on the fact that the importance of protecting public utilities such as power infrastructure, noting that cable theft not only causes financial losses but also disrupts electricity supply, affecting residents and businesses alike.

The Kalat district administration has called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activity, ensuring a collective effort against organized crime.
