KP Police to Curb Militant Use of Mining Explosives

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police has decided to formulate a comprehensive strategy to prevent the illicit use of commercial mining explosives in terrorist activities.

According to police authorities, forensic evidence from recent Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts confirms that militants are increasingly utilizing mining-grade explosive materials.

Officials revealed that mining explosives were used in at least ten recent terrorist incidents across the province.

In response, special committees comprising members from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Special Branch will be established to map out the strategy.

These committees are tasked with auditing commercial explosive supplies and investigating alternative channels through which militants acquire these dangerous materials.

Measures to Eliminate Militancy in KP

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has remained on the frontline of Pakistan’s war against militancy, necessitating a dynamic and multi-layered security strategy.

To counter the resurgence of militant groups, the provincial government and security forces have significantly shifted from reactive policing to proactive intelligence-led operations.

Central to these measures is the capacity building of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Special Branch, which are being equipped with modern surveillance, data analytics, and forensic tools.

Tightening the noose around terror financing and weapon supply chains has also become a top priority.

This includes stricter border management along the Durand Line, biometric tracking at checkpoints, and the newly initiated audits of commercial assets—such as mining explosives—to stop internal leakages to insurgent groups.

Furthermore, under national action frameworks, large-scale kinetic operations are regularly conducted in volatile districts, particularly in the merged tribal areas.

These military and police operations are increasingly paired with de-radicalization programs and socio-economic development initiatives aimed at engaging local youth.

By combining rigorous law enforcement, strict regulatory oversight, and community-based rehabilitation, authorities are working to dismantle both the operational capabilities and the ideological roots of militancy in the region.
