KP estimates Rs9.45 billion needed for Road, bridge restoration after floods

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Communications and Works Department has released an assessment estimating Rs9.45 billion for the restoration of road and bridge infrastructure severely damaged by flash floods and torrential rains that struck the province between August 15 and 22.

The monsoon spell has taken a heavy toll on the province, leaving at least 393 people dead and 190 injured. In this regard, as per the official figures, 1,618 houses were damaged, of which 433 were completely destroyed. So far, a detailed report issued on Saturday mentioned the widespread devastation to road networks. 

The department confirmed damage to 331 roads at 336 locations, rendering approximately 493 kilometres unusable due to flooding and landslides. Furthermore, 229 roads have been partially reopened to traffic, while 50 routes have been fully restored.

The floods also destroyed 32 bridges across K-P. In addition, 22 bridges have been partially reopened and one fully restored, nine remain completely out of service. The estimated cost of bridge restoration has been placed at Rs1.12 billion.

Moreover, Swat was among the hardest-hit districts, where 79 roads were damaged at 80 points. In this sense, rehabilitation costs in Swat have already surpassed Rs450 million. Similarly, in Buner district, 43 roads were damaged, with 39 partially restored and four still inaccessible.

Additionally, the authorities stressed that repair and restoration efforts are ongoing across all affected districts, with priority given to areas where road connectivity is critical for relief operations and public movement.
